Statement on Passage of E-School “Reform” Package

COLUMBUS -- Former United States Congressman and Democratic nominee for Ohio Auditor of State Zack Space issued the following statement Friday morning after the Ohio General Assembly passed two bills this week aimed at increasing oversight of e-schools:

“After allowing Ohio to become the ‘Wild, Wild West’ of charter schools, and derailing attempts at oversight for decades, Keith Faber and his colleagues in the Ohio General Assembly have decided that now is the time to care about oversight of for-profit charter schools. This is nothing more than election-year pandering and an insult to the intelligence of Ohio voters.

Unfortunately for taxpayers, this so-called ‘reform’ comes by way of a study committee whose report on e-schools will conveniently emerge after November’s elections, and a crutch for an e-school that was already found to have overbilled the State by millions of dollars.

If these incumbent politicians were serious about preventing the biggest political scandal in Ohio history, they would have acted years ago when alarms were first sounded. Instead, Ohioans have been scammed out of over $1 billion and treated to a showcase in shameless self-preservation.”

Zack Space has announced plans for the creation of a Special Audit Unit to audit the attendance of for-profit charter schools and to determine how much taxpayers were overbilled.

Keith Faber, the Republican nominee for Auditor of State, used his legislative power to help ECOT evade oversight, then took credit for the school’s demise in a misleading statement deemed “Mostly False” by independent fact-checker PolitiFact.
